The nickel-plated steel used in the metal crimp finishing and swivel hook attachment for the lanyards are designed to be corrosion resistant. Steel on its own is a versatile material, but it is prone to oxidation also known as rust, especially when it comes into contact with water. Since nickel does not break down as it oxidizes, it is bonded on top of the steel to create a barrier to prevent the steel from decomposing.
